Sobriety Is Not The Ultimate Goal A Good Life Is.

Because addiction takes so much away from a person’s life, they usually start out with very little when they finally decide to get sober. I think that it is the process of having to work for everything again that makes us appreciate it even more. People in long term recovery know how fragile this can be and therefore learn to value these things more than they did before. I’ve spent the last six years researching and understanding alcoholism, addiction, and how people get sober.

Alcohol helped me forget my awkwardness and not-belongingness and it helped me talk to and be with people without my neck muscles freezing up . Drunk me didn’t have to worry if I was alone at a party because drunk me didn’t abide such things. Drunk me didn’t worry if she belonged, or said the right thing, or had to have small talk because drunk me just handled that. If people press that response, I’ll either stare at them and hold an uncomfortable silence , or just change the subject. There are exceptions to this, like if someone alludes to their own struggle with alcohol, and then I might offer up a bit more of my personal experience.

For me, the hardest chapter of sobriety was returning to the world of face-to-face socialising and reconnecting with my loved ones without the tantalising lubricant of alcohol. Without the social lubrication of her usual prosecco, writer Lauren McCurry found her relationships changed significantly, and for the better.

Pick up some new hobbies to fill that extra space in your life. For some sober life people, this means working out, and for others, it’s volunteering.

Most trends turn over quickly, but drinking – from mimosas at brunch to post-work beers – has always been portrayed as the ultimate way to have a good time . Delage may have been a fabrication, but the fact that the campaign was so successful had much to do with just how closely she resembled the real influencers whose cocktail-filled lives many follow and covet.
